Melissa attended the Rudolf Steiner School in Manhattan, K-12. She studied fine arts at Bennington College and spent four years in Italy. Back in New York, Melissa worked as a producer for Italian public television and as a print editor for several non-profits. In 1989, when her son was 2, she and her husband started the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School (as Star Meadow Nursery-Kindergarten).

Trained in Waldorf Early Childhood education, Melissa taught early childhood at HVWS for six years and was a class teacher for six years and an administrator for five. She has also taught chorus, geometry and perspective drawing, and directs the 8th grade Nativity Play and the Steiner Seminar. Melissa still works as an editor and proofreader and mentors teacher trainees for Sunbridge Institute. She loves singing, art, dark chocolate, and learning foreign languages.
