Summer Camp

Posted On: 4/12/2018 10:54 AM

Dear Housatonic Valley Waldorf School and Summer Camp Community,

The Teacher Search Committee, the Board of Trustees, and the College of Teachers are delighted to announce that Marcela Perez Goode—better known as Maestra Marcela—has been hired as our new Summer Camp Director.

Marcela has an undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia and a master’s degree of Science, History and Theory from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. Marcela discovered Waldorf Education while she was looking for a school for her daughter, Maya (HVWS class of 2016), and has taken many courses to broaden her understanding of Waldorf education and Anthroposophy.

Maestra Marcela began teaching Spanish to grades 1-8 at HVWS in 2007. She has also worked as a kindergarten assistant in the Sunflower class and currently leads Morning Glories Parent-Child classes two days per week. In addition, she serves as our school ombudsman, Faculty Chair, and is a member of several committees. Marcela has volunteered as an assistant kindergarten teacher in Bogota, worked as a summer camp counselor in France, and opened her own day care center here in Connecticut. Marcela’s warmth and dedication have made her a valued member of our community, and she looks forward to continuing the success of our Summer Camp program.

Marcela will be taking over the role of Summer Camp Director from Carrie Reilly. As many of you know, Carrie has been the heart of summer camp for many summers. While Carrie will still be helping at camp for a few weeks this summer, she will be stepping back to take a much needed—and uncharacteristic—break! We are so happy that Marcela is stepping into her shoes.

Carrie writes:
“I have been the Camp Director for the last several years and have enjoyed my time tremendously. While I will be handing over the responsibilities to our new Camp Director, Marcela Perez, this summer, I will be at camp to set up and facilitate the transition. I am excited that I will be there for the first two weeks of camp as the teacher for our “Explorers” on the Early Childhood campus. I will cherish the many relationships I have developed with families that join us during the summer. It has been wonderful watching these children grow over the years. It has also been so lovely to meet new students who have entered HVWS in the Fall after a session of summer camp, creating a connection with these families through camp. I will miss my summer camp experiences, but I look forward to helping our new Director develop a love for camp as great as mine has been over the years! Thank you so much and enjoy your summer!”

Please join us in welcoming Marcela to her new position and expressing our gratitude to Carrie for her many years as our dedicated Summer Camp Director.

Warmly,
Laura Stotz for the Board of Trustees, Laura Wittmer for the Teacher Search Committee and Leslie Lew for the College of Teachers
