Why Choose HVWS?

Housatonic Valley Waldorf School is the only Waldorf grade school in Connecticut, serving children from birth to Eighth Grade. Our families come from around the neighborhood and around the world, and share a desire to provide their child with an education that will make a lasting difference in their lives and their families with a vibrant, supportive community.

Why Choose Waldorf Education?

Waldorf education is one of the largest and fastest growing educational approaches in the world, with more than 1,000 Waldorf schools in more than 60 countries, and over 2,000 Waldorf Early Childhood programs on five continents. The Waldorf philosophy educates the whole child and features a curriculum that is age-appropriate and brilliantly reflects the developing child. The Waldorf student is the creative student, who learns how to absorb information, build personal resilience, and develop a moral compass that will guide him or her throughout life.

Why Choose An Independent School?

The term "independent school" implies a separation from the policies, curriculum, expectations, and obligations that are found in the state-mandated schools. An independent school may be the right choice for families who seek a specific philosophy of education, freedom from a certain framework of instruction and testing, and a more intimate environment. If you think this is a pathway for your family, you may wish to read the following essay by the Director of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools, Doug Lyons.

What Do Our Alumni Say?

I feel I have broader ideas. I can think of different ways of approaching something, while most of my classmates have the same idea. My self-confidence is stronger than others in my grade.

-Sarah Grose, HVWS Class of 2005

What Do Our Parents Say?

I love that Waldorf teaches the whole child: mind, body and spirit. I love that you teach in a way that allows all children to excel. I love that you teach an appreciation of nature and the world around us. I love that you’re more than just amazing academics—you bring depth to a child’s life and sense of self.

-Andrea Anderson

Being personally acquainted with a number of Waldorf students, I can say that they come closer to realizing their own potentials than practically anyone I know.

-Joseph Weizenbaum, Professor, MIT, author of Computer Power and Human Reason
