Advent Spiral, Early Childhood

Fri, 13 Dec 2013 21:30:00 GMT - Sat, 14 Dec 2013 00:00:00 GMT

The spiral path is made from pine boughs, crystals and shells. The walk along the path through the spiral represents the child walking through life on earth. The apple represents the nourishment that the earth gives us. The light of the candles suggest that people should be clear and bright of thought and warm of heart. We would like to stay in silence during this celebration. This allows us to be as reverent as possible in the beauty and magic of the setting. Please help us respect this mood. Parents and children need to arrive as follows:
Rose Arrives at 4:30 PM
Sunflower Arrives at 5:15 PM
NOTE: We ask that you do not bring younger siblings to this particular celebration. Children with long hair need to wear their hair pulled back off their faces, and please no flowing garments. No use of electronic devices of any kind for any reason.

The Shepherd's Play

Fri, 20 Dec 2013 00:00:00 GMT - Fri, 20 Dec 2013 02:00:00 GMT

About The Shepherd’s Play Waldorf educator William Ward writes:

In the context of the universal spirit of humanity, the Shepherds’ Play presents the cosmic truth that each newborn child is a Holy Child and comes into the world trailing clouds of glory. In each human birth occurs the rebirth of spirit in the world and each calls for reverence and love.

For grade-school children, the play is primarily pictorial, speaking more through tableau, gesture, and archetypal character than through the rhymed, and somewhat archaic dialogue. The play gives them an experience of the renewal of the light, of the miracle of the spirit coming into the world, and also of their identity with that spirit. The play also offers an atmosphere comprised of reverence, humility, peace, and love, as well as of the boisterous good spirits of the shepherds, an atmosphere that for a brief moment shines as a candle in the hectic, commercial miasma of the holiday season.

The play is part of a collection translated in the 1940s by Karl Julius Schroer--a friend and teacher of Rudolf Steiner--from the little island of Oberufer on the Danube near Pressburg, close to the frontiers of Austria and Hungary. In the sixteenth or early seventeenth century a group of German people migrated there from the neighborhood of Lake Constance and had taken with them a cycle of religious plays which they had received by tradition form their ancestors. When Schroer collected the plays, the parts were still hereditary in certain families; no complete copy existed but each family treasured a manuscript of the words of one particular part. Surrounded as they were by people of different nations and languages, the peasants of Oberufer preserved unaltered--in a way found in no other similar German plays--both the text itself and the tradition of acting.

Due to limited seating we ask that the Thursday evening performance be reserved for adults, alumni, and friends of HVWS . The Grade students will be treated to a special performance during school.
