Healing Education And Remedial Training
Including The Extra Lesson
A Three-Year, Part-Time Certification with Rachel Ross, M.Ed.
October 2013 - July 2016
at the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School
More and more students in our schools display developmental and learning difficulties, yet most Waldorf teacher trainings spend little time addressing remedial needs, and most schools do not have trained remedial specialists on staff.
The HEART course prepares Waldorf teachers to assess and address the needs of students with developmental and learning difficulties. Based on an anthroposophical understanding of child development, it includes training in Audrey McAllen’s Extra Lesson program.
HEART is a three-year training consisting of three weekends each school year (October, January, and April) and two weeks each July at the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School. Annual tuition is $2,900.
HEART is open to those who have completed Foundation Studies in anthroposophy and have either Waldorf or other teacher training, and teaching experience. HEART also provides graduates of Extra Lesson Trainings an opportunity for continuing education and sharing of work.
The Faculty (to be announced) consists of remedial and arts specialists, master teachers, special education teachers, physicians, and others. Rachel Ross, co-director, has an M.Ed. from Sunbridge College and Massachusetts Certifications in Elementary Education and Moderate Special Needs. A graduate of the London School of Eurythmy, she received her Therapeutic Eurythmy diploma from the Medical Section of the Goetheanum. Rachel has taught eurythmy and the Extra Lesson to children and adults for over 35 years. Melissa Merkling, co-director, founded the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School and has a certificate in Waldorf Early Childhood Education from Sunbridge College. An experienced Kindergarten and Class teacher, she has also taught Chorus, served as school administrator, and run many Steiner study groups. She attended the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, K-12.
