He was a man known for his gentleness, his unassuming nature and his ability to bring light and warmth to those who had been in darkness. In Europe a tradition has arisen of celebrating Martinmas with lantern walks. This is a time when the darkness of the year is growing stronger, and we can gather the last rays of the summer’s sun to light our way towards the darkness of mid-winter. When a candle is lit within a home-made lantern for Martinmas, this becomes the first glow of a light with a completely different nature, the first spark of inner light. MARTINMAS AT SCHOOL DATE: Monday, November 7th, 2016 LOCATION: Rose Garden Building. ARRIVAL TIME: Parents and children need to arrive at 4:30 pm. Please follow the normal morning drop off procedures. Teachers will escort your children into the building. Remember do not walk with your child through the Playground, because the festive lights are lit. After dropping off your children, please park your cars at the designated parking spaces available in front of the Rose Garden Building, the Grades School's parking lot or the Taunton Hill parking lot. Then join us immediately for a Puppet show in the Rose Garden Building. After the Puppet show, parents and siblings will go to the EC Playground and create a human tunnel behind the play house and follow the votive jars toward the swing set area. The Class Parents will provide more specific directions in how to create this form when you arrive. Meanwhile, the Sunflower and Rose children will stay inside with their teachers lighting their lanterns. The first walk will be teachers and children only. Parents and siblings will meet the students after the first walk. Rose parents will meet their children in front of the Rose Class' playground door. Sunflower parents will meet their children in front of the shed. Parents and siblings are then invited to join in for a second silent walk. The purpose of walking in silence is to create a mood of reverence, which the parents will continue. Please leave quietly to continue the inward experience. Please remember to have your child visit Mother Earth before leaving. She will be seated by the Rose Class' goodbye bench on the platform. She will have a small gift for each child. Gentle reminder: NO PHOTOGRAPHY throughout the festival because it takes away the reverence we are trying to create. Children will make lanterns in class; parents may bring their own. The children will walk with their class teachers. Parents and siblings will follow behind. The walk will be in silence, to allow us to be as open and reverent as possible in the magic and beauty of the woodland setting. Please help us respect this mood -- the children look to the adults for this reverence. Martinmas songs will begin the walk and end it. This allows us to be as reverent as possible in the beauty and magic of the setting. Please help us respect this mood. When he was walking through the fields to go to work, a rice ball fell out of his handkerchief and rolled down a hole. He tried to stop this from happening but when he leaned over the hole he heard someone singing. He was so surprised and interested that he too rolled down the hole. This story tell us about all the adventures he had in this magical place and how he became wealthy after this adventure. The poor man's neighbor heard about this journey and with greed in his heart tried to replicate it. Reading Rudolf Steiner’s works is especially rewarding in a group; this class is open to seasoned students of Steiner and newcomers alike. We will read Steiner’s book Theosophy. Our mission in this class is to discover Steiner’s worldview, and to discover in our own lives the reality he describes. This requires expanding our awareness to include the invisible and inaudible, and seeking to experience the extent to which, without realizing it, we are already living in the soul and spirit worlds Steiner describes. Artistic practice is essential to this process, and the class incorporates various kinds of artistic work. Materials are included in tuition. Please commit to attending every class. Total tuition is payable in advance at the first session; no partial payments or refunds. Participants should purchase their own copy of the book, or sign one out of the school library.
