Our annual State of the School meeting will begin with a potluck supper (finger foods, please) and continue with brief reports and introductions of staff and board members. It's always a nice way for parents and HVWS staff to get acquainted, or reacquainted, and hear the latest news about our school.  This year we welcome a great numer of new staff and this event will be your first opportunity to meet our new Administrator, Joanne Andruscavage.

All families are encouraged to attend so childcare will be offered in the Eurythmy Room.  If you wish to take advantage of the childcare, please RSVP to the office no later than Monday, 9/30. Cost: $10 per child.

Games and good cheer will be provided by the 7th grade students. All proceeds will go to their class fundraising. Food is not permitted in the Eurythmy room, so please make certain your child has eaten beforehand.

The spiral path is made from pine boughs, crystals and shells. The walk along the path through the spiral represents the child walking through life on earth. The apple represents the nourishment that the earth gives us. The light of the candles suggest that people should be clear and bright of thought and warm of heart. We would like to stay in silence during this celebration. This allows us to be as reverent as possible in the beauty and magic of the setting. Please help us respect this mood. Parents and children need to arrive as follows:

Rose Arrives at 4:30 PM
Sunflower Arrives at 5:15 PM

NOTE: We ask that you do not bring younger siblings to this particular celebration. Children with long hair need to wear their hair pulled back off their faces, and please no flowing garments. No use of electronic devices of any kind for any reason.

Treat your young child to a free puppet show: The Bremen Town Musicians by Brothers Grimm.   The puppet show is on Saturday, March 22 at 10am at 1 Jacklin Road, Newtown; the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School grade school campus.

The puppet show in the Waldorf tradition features hand-sewn puppets, sumptuous plant-dyed silks and a simple, age-appropriate performance style suited to young children's attention spans and level of awareness- 2-5 year-olds. A peaceful and enchanted mood prevails.

A goodwill offering will be collected to support Women for Women International.
An organization helping women survivors of war rebuild their lives.

About The Shepherd’s Play Waldorf educator William Ward writes:

In the context of the universal spirit of humanity, the Shepherds’ Play presents the cosmic truth that each newborn child is a Holy Child and comes into the world trailing clouds of glory. In each human birth occurs the rebirth of spirit in the world and each calls for reverence and love.

For grade-school children, the play is primarily pictorial, speaking more through tableau, gesture, and archetypal character than through the rhymed, and somewhat archaic dialogue. The play gives them an experience of the renewal of the light, of the miracle of the spirit coming into the world, and also of their identity with that spirit. The play also offers an atmosphere comprised of reverence, humility, peace, and love, as well as of the boisterous good spirits of the shepherds, an atmosphere that for a brief moment shines as a candle in the hectic, commercial miasma of the holiday season.

The play is part of a collection translated in the 1940s by Karl Julius Schroer--a friend and teacher of Rudolf Steiner--from the little island of Oberufer on the Danube near Pressburg, close to the frontiers of Austria and Hungary. In the sixteenth or early seventeenth century a group of German people migrated there from the neighborhood of Lake Constance and had taken with them a cycle of religious plays which they had received by tradition form their ancestors. When Schroer collected the plays, the parts were still hereditary in certain families; no complete copy existed but each family treasured a manuscript of the words of one particular part. Surrounded as they were by people of different nations and languages, the peasants of Oberufer preserved unaltered--in a way found in no other similar German plays--both the text itself and the tradition of acting.

Due to limited seating we ask that the Thursday evening performance be reserved for adults, alumni, and friends of HVWS . The Grade students will be treated to a special performance during school.

These lectures were given to teachers of the first Waldorf School in Stuttgart, Germany in 1919. Regarding the human being as 'a threefold being of body, soul and spirit', the lectures begin with a survey of the human being 'from the soul which stands between body and spirit.' If you are interested in Waldorf teaching anytime in the future, or are currently a Waldorf teacher, you will find these lectures enlightening. NEW DATE!

"A Pageant of Ungodly Behavior"
by David Blair

This play was originally written for and performed by Fourth Grade teacher Miss Remensperger and her class when she was a student in 1992. "A pageant of Ungodly Behavior," follows a cast of colorful characters from Gods and dwarfs to giantess maidens, as they navigate a world rife with love, greed and hopefully loyal friendship.

Verging on tragedy but then plummeting straight into hilarity, our play offers you mere mortals, a glimpse of the many follies of the Norse Gods.

Appropriate for children in Second Grade and up.

Siblings:

The gesture of the firstgrade tea is to honor those children "crossing" over to the gradeschool.  With this in mind, as well as space limitations, the preferencewould be to attend the tea with your first grade child only.  Weunderstand this is not always possible but trust you will do your bestto make that happen.  Of course nursing babies are always the exception!

Meeting starting at 7:00 PM.

RSVP to Laura Stotz by e-mail laura@fieldstonecompanies.com or call or text 203-499-8934 so that we may get a sense of attendance, if you have any questions, or to get involved in the PTA.

Stonewall Speakers, a program of the not-for-profit Connecticut Stonewall Foundation, Inc., is a volunteer speaker's bureau comprised of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people and their allies. Their speakers share their hearts, stories, and time to help eliminate hate and promote understanding. What is WOW-Day?
WOW stands for Waldorf One World. Once a year, students at Waldorf schools dedicate one day to support developing Waldorf initiatives around the world. Through artistic activities or one-day jobs children and adolescents raise money for Waldorf facilities in urgent need of help. Last year, WOW-Day included creative solidarity campaigns in more than 230 Waldorf schools in 35 countries. Read more at: http://www.freunde-waldorf.de/en/wow-day.html.

This Friday our Eighth Grade Class will hold an afternoon bake sale and donate the proceeds to WOW-Day. with Melissa Merkling
10 Tuesday mornings, 8:30-10:30 am, starting October 7, 2014
Tuition $180

Explore new dimensions in your understanding and appreciation of Waldorf education and  Anthroposophy, the modern spiritual path that underlies it. Reading Steiner's works is especially rewarding in a group; this class is open to seasoned students of Steiner and newcomers alike.

Our mission is to discover Steiner's worldview, and to discover in our own lives the reality he describes. This requires expanding our awareness to include the invisible and inaudible, and seeking to experience the extent to which, without realizing it, we are already living in the soul and spirit worlds Steiner describes.

Artistic practice is essential to this process, and the class incorporates various kinds of artistic work. Materials are included in tuition fee.

If you are interested in joining, email mmerkling@charter.net. Please commit to attending every class. Tuition for the 10 classes is payable in advance at the first session; no partial payments or refunds.
We will begin by reading Steiner's book, The Education of the Child in the Light of Anthroposophy, downloadable from the Steiner Archive website.

HVWS founder Melissa Merkling has been studying Rudolf Steiner for over twenty years. She is certified in Waldorf Early Childhood Education and taught for 15 years in the HVWS Early Childhood and Grades programs, as well as serving as administrator, parent, and board member of the school. She attended the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City in grades K-12.

She attended the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City in grades K-12.

with Melissa Merkling
