The Eighth Grade is pleased to present The Little Play of the Nativity. Written by Arvia MacKaye Ege, a teacher at the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, it is adapted from the medieval Shepherds' Play. Such plays were performed by parishioners in European churches in the Middle Ages to bring the Christmas story, simply yet vividly, to the common people.

At the Steiner School in New York, the Little Play is presented every year by the Eighth Grade. Melissa Merkling, who appeared in it herself in 1967, brought it to HVWS in 2010.

The Eighth Graders will present the play to the HVWS students the following day, Friday, during school. Due to space constraints, grownups are cordially invited to attend the Thursday evening performance. It will take place in the Eurythmy Room (lower level of Compass Hall).

Stonewall Speakers, a program of the not-for-profit Connecticut Stonewall Foundation, Inc., is a volunteer speaker's bureau comprised of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people and their allies. Their speakers share their hearts, stories, and time to help eliminate hate and promote understanding. Speaking engagements combine personal life stories with a judgement-free question and answer session.

This event is part of an ongoing initiative of community enrichment and diversity training organized by the Diversity Committee.

What is WOW-Day?
WOW stands for Waldorf One World. Once a year, students at Waldorf schools dedicate one day to support developing Waldorf initiatives around the world. Through artistic activities or one-day jobs children and adolescents raise money for Waldorf facilities in urgent need of help. Last year, WOW-Day included creative solidarity campaigns in more than 230 Waldorf schools in 35 countries. Read more at: http://www.freunde-waldorf.de/en/wow-day.html.

This Friday our Eighth Grade Class will hold an afternoon bake sale and donate the proceeds to WOW-Day. with Melissa Merkling
10 Tuesday mornings, 8:30-10:30 am, starting October 7, 2014
Tuition $180

Explore new dimensions in your understanding and appreciation of Waldorf education and  Anthroposophy, the modern spiritual path that underlies it. Reading Steiner's works is especially rewarding in a group; this class is open to seasoned students of Steiner and newcomers alike.

Our mission is to discover Steiner's worldview, and to discover in our own lives the reality he describes. This requires expanding our awareness to include the invisible and inaudible, and seeking to experience the extent to which, without realizing it, we are already living in the soul and spirit worlds Steiner describes.

Artistic practice is essential to this process, and the class incorporates various kinds of artistic work. Materials are included in tuition fee.

If you are interested in joining, email mmerkling@charter.net. Please commit to attending every class. Tuition for the 10 classes is payable in advance at the first session; no partial payments or refunds.
We will begin by reading Steiner's book, The Education of the Child in the Light of Anthroposophy, downloadable from the Steiner Archive website.

HVWS founder Melissa Merkling has been studying Rudolf Steiner for over twenty years. She is certified in Waldorf Early Childhood Education and taught for 15 years in the HVWS Early Childhood and Grades programs, as well as serving as administrator, parent, and board member of the school. She attended the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City in grades K-12.

Please join HVWS' Middle School joint (6th, 7th and 8th) parent evening for a talk by Lisa Romero who will speak on the subject of sexuality. The evening will begin in the Atrium of Compass Hall at 7PM on January 7th (snow date January 8th).

LISA ROMERO is a certified homeopathic, complementary health practitioner and adult educator who has applied anthroposophy to her practice since 1990. Since 1998, she has provided educational courses enriched with the ideas of anthroposophy .

Lisa is currently working with Waldorf teachers and counselors to develop a curriculum and model of approaching evolving consciousness and issues of gender and sexuality from seventh grade through high school. For several years Lisa was the lecturer for Health and Nutrition and Male/Female Studies at Sydney Rudolf Steiner College (Parsifal College)

Since 2006, the primary focus of her work has been teaching meditation out of her work with anthroposophy. She has written, The Inner Work Path – A Foundation for Meditative Practice in the Light of Anthroposophy, available from Steinerbooks.

She also designed and facilitated the Educaredo Towards Health and Healing course. This training ran eight, year-long courses, working with therapists, from all modalities, as well as Waldorf teachers, to bring the practical application of therapeutic and pedagogical methods. She continues to teach in numerous trainings and seminars for several organizations. She brings a depth of insight, together with a dedication to the path of unfolding consciousness, that is reflected in the experiences and changes of the participants who share in her work.

Session 2

First of 10 classes: Tuesday, January 6, 8:30-10:30 AM
Morning Glories Classroom, Rose Garden Building

A weekly class exploring Anthroposophy, the philosophy behind Waldorf education, with Melissa Merkling

Explore new dimensions in your understanding and appreciation of Waldorf education and Anthroposophy, the modern spiritual path that underlies it. Reading Rudolf Steiner's works is especially rewarding in a group; this class is open to seasoned students of Steiner and newcomers alike.

We will read Steiner's book, How to Know Higher Worlds.

Materials are included in the tuition fee.

If you are interested in joining, or for more information, e-mail mmerkling@charter.net. Please commit to attending every class. Tuition for the 10 classes is payable in advance at the first session; no partial payments or refunds.

HVWS founder Melissa Merkling has been attending and leading Steiner study groups for over twenty years. She is certified in Waldorf Early Childhood Education and has taught in the HVWS Early Childhood (6 years) and Grades (9 years) programs, as well as serving as administrator (5 years), parent, and board member of the school. She attended the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City in grades K-12.

Materials are included in the tuition fee.
