History

The seeds of our school were planted on April 12, 1989 when a small group of parents first met in New Milford, CT to discuss opening a Waldorf-based kindergarten. The following January, a weekly playgroup began in New Milford, and within the year grew into a three-day nursery-kindergarten known as Star Meadow. In October 1990 the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School Association, Inc. was formed with the goal of starting a Waldorf school that spanned Early Childhood through Grade 8. With expansion and several more moves, HVWS finally settled into its own campus in the western part of Newtown, CT. Today, HVWS is a thriving and fully accredited Waldorf school, with additional programs for children, Waldorf teachers, and adults.

Leadership

All Waldorf schools operate with a governance structure of shared leadership. HVWS is governed by a Board of Trustees and a College of Teachers. The Board of Trustees is responsible for financial, legal, and property matters. Decisions about teaching matters belong to the College of Teachers, drawn from faculty leadership. The Administration Team oversees the daily operations of the school. The Leadership Council, comprised of representatives from the Board, College, and Administration, is happy to answer questions or address concerns and can be reached via e-mail at leadership@waldorfct.org.
